The City’s Monster Block Party

2nd Street Festival Returns August 3rd

Philadelphia’s biggest FREE Festival to host the Best in Music, Food, and Culture in the heart of Northern Liberties

The founders of the 2nd Street Festival today announced the return of the musical bash and block party to Northern Liberties on Sunday, August 3rd. The event is a FREE, all-day celebration of the community and culture on 2nd Street, with over 150 vendors including restaurants and beer gardens, three stages, crafts, kids programs, workshops, green initiatives, and a critically-acclaimed musical lineup.

“This really is a unique, grass-roots neighborhood endeavor, putting a spotlight on the businesses, artists, and community members that make Northern Liberties so special,” remarked Owen Kamihira, owner of Bar Ferdinand and El Camino Real. Kamihira is a founding sponsor, along with Oron Daskal of North Bowl, and William Reed of Standard Tap and Johnny Brenda’s. Their restaurants and a host of others in the heart of Northern Liberties ground the festival in food, merriment, and music.

The 2014 installment marks the fourth year of unique partnership with the Philadelphia Folksong Society (PFS) in programming and producing the 6-block party between Germantown and Green Streets on 2nd Street. In previous years the likes of indie goddess tUNeYaRdS, Philly heroes Man Man, and folk-rockers The Low Anthem have headlined the Festival; and while musical acts will be announced at a later date, the performer list currently boasts a who’s who of Philly-centric acts designed to make waves in the musical community and among the massive audience expected to attend. “By working with organizations and sponsors in one of the city’s most vibrant neighborhoods, we make this festival a truly unique experience - bringing the community together through art, local vendors, food and drink, and of course, music,” said Noah Swistak, Associate Director of the PFS. “For 2nd Street Fest, we align with partners to push our boundaries, presenting everything from authentic roots to cult favorites, from traditional folk to hip hop, world, jazz, indie and R&B.

Last year, the Festival boasted a crowd of 35,000 strong over the course of the ten hours of Festivities. Nicky Devine, who steps out of her normal day job at Johnny Brenda’s to once again serve as Festival Director, reminds “2nd Street welcomes families and attendees of all ages by offering kids concerts and activities, workshops, craft vendors and demonstrations, jams, and other programming gems.”  Hundreds of craft vendors will line the streets; an army of volunteers will assist the expected crowd of over 40,000; and beer gardens and restaurants will feature sponsored brewery brands Yards, Brooklyn, Flying Fish, Leinenkugel, Pabst Blue Ribbon, Stoudts, and Miller Lite along with other local food and beer specials.

Like 2013, the Festival is strengthening its relationship with the community by partnering with The Northern Liberties Neighbors association. Thanks to both the Festival and the NLNA’s efforts last year, 2nd Street Festival raised over $6,000 for Liberty Lands Park. This year, all the money raised will go towards a Trash Initiative for the neighborhood and the surrounding areas – compost, recycling, and cigarette disposal have become hot topics for the growing neighborhood. As Nicky Devine points out, “We’ve started using the saying ‘when you give to the Festival, you are giving to the neighborhood’ when speaking to Sponsors this year. It’s important for us to not just be one big party, but instead a year-round community entity”. For more on supporting the Festival, you can visit www.2ndStFestival.org/supportus.
